What We Do
Mission Statement
We are dedicated to educating and empowering the public
about the interconnection between energy, environment, and economics.
We believe the public needs to be able to make informed decisions
about living sustainably and using local resources in an urban
setting. We accomplish this by presenting possibilities for the
future through programs such as workshops, seminars, conferences,
film screenings panel discussions and town hall gatherings.
Events
Informing New Yorkers about living sustainably in the city is
a core function of LES.
We organize four different types of events in order to accomplish
this: permaculture design certificate courses, workshops, film
screenings, and presentations.
Permaculture Design Certification Courses
Permaculture is design system for living sustainably.
The 72-hour permaculture design certification course is the
first step to living more sustainably. LES organizes these courses
in the city and provides an economical and rewarding experience
for students through classroom teaching, hands-on experience
and cultural resources like film screenings and presentations
by local practitioners.
Workshops
Our interactive workshops include permaculture
design courses and individual workshops on how to live more
sustainably in the city. All ages are encouraged to attend and
workshop fees are set at a reasonable prices to accommodate
different financial circumstances. Some workshops we offer are:
Introduction to Permaculture
DIY Natural Body Products
Urban Permaculture
Composting
Film Screenings
We maintain an extensive list of films
on a wide array of topics.

Following each screening we facilitate a lively, engaging and
respectful discussion of the film and audience reactions. Film
screenings are held in public venues and a modest donation is
requested to defray the costs of travel and equipment upkeep.
We are always looking for new venues, so please contact us if
you can provide a location, blank wall, chairs, an electrical
outlet, and an audience. We’ll supply the rest.
Presentations
LES has organized presentations by a number
of noted authors and experts, including:
Diana Leafe Christian –
ecovillages and intentional communities
Eric Toensmeier – perennial vegetables and permaculture
Dmitry Orlov – Russian collapse and echoes in America
David Yarrow – nutrient-dense foods and soil health
Philip Botwinick – monetary systems
We’d love to schedule an event
for you and/or your group. Please contact
us. |
